Menu Visibility Overview

Toast has made it easy for you to set up where your menus display. You can set visibility at the menu group, item, or modifier level. Learn how to easily make your menu(s) and their contents visible and available to be ordered from the different devices and systems across Toast.

Menu visibility settings impact where your menus are shown. Some examples of issues that are solved by checking your menu visibility settings include:

  • Your menu isn't showing up on Toast Online Ordering or the kiosk
  • One of your menu buttons disappeared from the POS
  • One of your in-store-only menus is showing up on third-party ordering platforms
  • Some of your menu items are missing from your terminal
  • Some of your modifiers or items aren't coming through to your POS, even though you see them in the back-end (Toast Web)
  • A menu item is missing from your third-party ordering partner

In these cases, you may need to adjust your menu visibility and/or menu availability settings. Menu visibility is covered in this article, and availability is covered in Set Menu Availability

Note: If you are logged into your POS and are met with a screen that says "LOADING MENUS...", please return to your menus in Toast Web and check the visibility settings. Often this indicates menus have been turned off OR menus are not available due to Time Specific Settings.

If neither of the above removes the "LOADING MENUS..." screen, please resync all data on the device in question.

Change Menu Visibility

There are several ways to change your menu visibility: either in the menu manager, the menu builder, or advanced properties. Watch the video below or continue reading for instructions for both methods.

Menu Visibility in Menu Manager

To adjust menu visibility in the menu manager, follow these steps:

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Menu management > Menu manager.
  2. Select the menu and item you'd like to adjust. The menu settings panel will appear on the right side of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the Channel visibility section and select where you'd like to make the menu or item visible and available for ordering. If none of the options below are selected, then your menu will only be visible in Toast Web (your restaurant's back-end).
    • POS
    • Kiosk, Toast Order and Pay (menus cannot differ between these two products)
    • Toast Online Ordering, Toast Takeout App (menus cannot differ between these two products)
    • Customer invoices
    • Online ordering partners
    • Toast Ecommerce (When enabled, this menu will be shown on your Toast Ecommerce page)
    • Websites View-Only (When enabled, this menu will be shown on your Toast Website)
  4. Select Save and Publish all changes to complete the setup.

Menu Visibility in Advanced Properties

To adjust menu visibility in advanced properties, follow these steps:

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Bulk managementAdvanced properties.
  2. Using the Show/Hide drop-down menu on the upper right-hand of your screen, select Visible To
  3. You can now easily change which menus are visible for POS, Kiosk, Order & Pay, Online Ordering, and Partners by simply checking or unchecking next to the menu, group, or item. If none of the options below are selected, then your menu will only be visible in Toast Web (your restaurant's back-end).

Example of menu visibility in advanced properties

  • In-store orders: POS - The menu is visible on a Toast terminal. The POS option must be selected in order to enable the kiosk option.
  • In-store orders: Kiosk, Order & Pay, and Menu & Pay - The menu is visible on a Toast Self-Ordering Kiosk and Toast Mobile Order & Pay™
  • Online orders: Toast - The menu is visible on Toast's online ordering site
  • Online orders: Ordering partners - The menu is visible on Toast Partner online ordering sites that you have integrated with. Below this setting, you'll see a banner that directs you to the menus experience or third-party order page if you want to adjust visibility for individual third-party ordering partners.

Note: If you set the visibility for a menu, the groups and items within that menu will follow the same visibility rules as the menu based on the menu hierarchy. You can easily uncheck a group or item if you'd like to exclude it from Online Ordering, for example. Be sure to expand your menu and make sure that your modifiers are set to the correct visibility so that they show up in all of the places where your menu items are visible.

4. Save and publish your changes.

If making changes to settings in Advanced properties, you'll be asked to confirm your edits before proceeding.

Note: In order for modifier groups to be visible to Online Orders: Toast, they must also be visible to In-store orders: POS.

Partner-Specific Menu Visibility Overview

Before this product update, you only had the option to set your menus as visible to all third-party ordering partners or none of them. Now, you have greater control– for example, you may choose to have one menu that is only visible to DoorDash and another that is only visible to Paytronix. This will help you with configurations like:

  • Adjusting the price of items for a specific ordering partner (e.g., menus on Uber Eats have a higher price)
  • Offering different items on specific partner integrations (e.g. the appetizer menu should not be available on Grubhub).

online ordering partners visibility toggle with partner checkboxes

Partner-specific visibility is currently available for direct online ordering integrations (Grubhub, Uber Eats, and DoorDash) as well as several other integration partners. Toast is working to include all online ordering partners soon, so if you have an integration that is not yet available on the partner-specific visibility setting, let them know they can check back soon for updates.

Below is the list of currently-supported third-party ordering partners:

DoorDashinKindMe&UDigiValet
Uber EatsDeliverectYour FareGrubhub Direct Enterprise (formerly LevelUp)
GrubhubRitualStreamOhWaiter
ChowNowFavorMenu AppOlo - upon request only

For a partner that isn't yet using the new configurations, you could still select the checkbox (e.g., for Olo, they could check the Olo box or uncheck it), and no change would happen for the third-party menu. Please reach out to the partner to get an update on the migration status.

Configure Partner-Specific Visibility in Edit Menus (MLM)

Restaurants that use MLM will need to access partner-specific menu visibility settings via the edit menus workflow.

Within a menu details page on edit menus (Menus > Menu management > Edit menus > select a specific menu), there will be a blue banner that links customers to the menus experience page, where the partner-specific visibility settings will be available.
