Article Body

Your menu setup is the most important part of your kiosk. Your guests will interact with it to place orders, so you'll want to make sure that the menu is simple to navigate, easy to understand, and visually appealing.

To learn more about kiosks/Kiosk Mode, check out this Toast Central article: Get Started With Kiosk Mode.

Only menus that are enabled to appear in Kiosk Mode will be available to your guests.

  2. On the menu details page, scroll down to the Advanced Properties Properties section and select In-store orders: Kiosk for the Visible To setting.
  3. Save and publish to finalize your changes.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all menus, menu groups, items, and modifiers you wish to appear on your kiosk.

You can watch the video below for a walkthrough of how to adjust your menu visibility settings.

How to adjust your menu visibility settings in Toast Web.

Manage Item Descriptions on Kiosk

Once you've added descriptions to your menu items, you can choose to display them on your kiosk. Displaying item descriptions will:

  • Explain the names of menu items that are not immediately recognizable, such as Goddess Salad or House Torta.
  • Provide guests with instructions on the ordering flow or highlight how to build their own items. For example, Choose your own bread, toppings, and cheese on a sandwich item.

For more information on adding these descriptions, see this Toast Central article: Add Descriptions to Menu Items.

If you don't wish to display item descriptions on your kiosk, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Front of house > Mobile dining solutions > Kiosk setup.
  2. In the Menu options section, toggle Show item descriptions to the Off position.
  3. Publish all changes.

  2. On the item details page, scroll down to Advanced Properties > Properties, and select Choose Image next to the Image setting.Images assigned to menu groups will also appear on Toast kiosk screens.

Menu Naming Best Practices for Kiosk

When naming parts of your menu like items or groups, keep in mind that the names will be guest-facing. This means that all names should be clear and easy to understand so guests can navigate the menu quickly and efficiently.  For example, an item called Chicken Tenders should be listed as such and should not be abbreviated to Chix Tend.

Abbreviations can still be used for the item's Kitchen Name to reduce the volume of item names on kitchen tickets, but any abbreviation in the POS Name field will appear while the device is in Kiosk Mode. For more information, see this Toast Central article: Customize Menu Item and Modifier Names for POS and KDS

For modifiers, consider naming modifier groups with a question or a command. For example, a sandwich modifier can be called Toasted? with options including Toasted and Not Toasted. Or, a modifier group can be called Choose Your Protein with options including Turkey, Ham, Salami, and more.

Modifier Options for Kiosk

Keep the following modifier options in mind when designing menus that will be used in Kiosk Mode:

  • Modifier behavior: Some modifiers require a selection to be made. For example, a protein has to be chosen on a build-your-own sandwich. Some modifiers are optional and should not pop up on the screen. Be sure the proper behavior is chosen for each modifier group so that guests understand what choices are required of them to complete their order. To learn more about modifier behaviors, see Modifier Groups and Modifier Options

  • Removing ingredients from menu items: One of the benefits of kiosks is that they allow guests to customize their orders. An easy way to allow them to customize an item is by creating a modifier group that allows ingredients to be removed from the item. The group should contain the names of the ingredients with No in front of them. These options should not be defaulted on. For example, for a Super Steak Sub menu item, the modifier options could be No Black Beans, No Tomatillo Sauce, etc.

  • Allergy group: Consider creating a modifier group titled Allergies? containing options like ALLERGY Milk, ALLERGY Nuts, ALLERGY Wheat, ALLERGY Eggs, ALLERGY Peanuts, ALLERGY Fish, and more. Apply the Optional modifier behavior to this group and apply the group to all food groups/items on the menu. Be sure multiple options can be selected so guests can indicate all applicable allergies.

  • Duplicate modifier quantities: Duplicate modifiers can be added on kiosk. To enable this functionality, make sure that the Duplicate Modifier option under the modifier's Properties section is set to By default, the same modifier can be added more than once in this group (Overridable on the modifier). A great example of this is an order of Wings, with four choices of sauce. A guest may wish to select 2 of the BBQ sauces rather than just one.

  • Nested modifiers - Nested modifiers, or modifier groups within a modifier group, can be added to a kiosk menu. If a kiosk menu is configured to include nested modifiers, these will automatically display as a side panel with additional options on the Kiosk when the main modifier option is selected. Only one level of nested modifiers is supported.
  • For example: A Torta Cubana Sandwich requires a side selection when ordered. This sandwich has a Side Salad modifier option, and this Side Salad has an additional nested Dressing modifier option. When a guest selects the sandwich, they are first prompted to pick a side salad option. Once they choose a side salad, they'll be prompted to choose a dressing option.

Hide Menus from Kiosk

You may choose to hide irrelevant menus, menu groups, items, modifier groups, and/or modifiers from your kiosk device(s).

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Bulk management Advanced properties.
  2. Open the Show/Hide drop-down, and ensure that Visible To is checked.
  3. Use the caret (arrow) icons to expand your menus as needed to find the specific items that you want to hide from your kiosk.
  4. Open the Visible To drop-down for that menu/group/item and uncheck Kiosk to hide it. This setting will only override any setting that is lower on the menu hierarchy. This means that you can display a menu item but hide some of its modifiers.
  5. Save and publish your changes

Note: Groups or items that are fully hidden (nothing selected for Visible To) will not be visible/available to be ordered from any POS terminal. However, items on hidden menus can be scanned with a barcode scanner, even from a kiosk.
